Obituary for Mervyn Sinclair Bunker

Mervyn Sinclair Bunker
Mervyn Sinclair Bunker
(Oct 17, 1930 – Mar 10, 2016)
Peacefully at Haliburton Hospital, Mervyn , son of Norman Bunker and Margaret Burnham, formerly of Altona.

Merv was a master custom-home builder, furniture maker, wood carver and story teller. Born in his grandmother’s house at Altona, ON to Norval (Norm) Bunker and Margaret Burnham, he left school at age 13 to work with his father’s concrete business during WWII.

He married Eleanor Goudie at Stouffville on April 17, 1948 and developed Bunker Bros. Builders with his closest brother Harvey. They built custom-homes together in the Uxbridge/Stouffville/Claremont area until 1974 when they both moved to Haliburton County. Merv built his new “old farmhouse” home on a wooded lot and over the years added restored historic log buildings and constructed his miniature village with its carved horses, carriages and furniture, all while collecting and dealing in antiques with Eleanor. His skill as a cabinet maker is attested when clients would await up to 18 months for his schedule to include their project.
Merv loved to fish and hunt and was always at home in the woods, especially in “Charlie’s cabin”. His “All You Ever Wanted To Know About A Country Boy” sold out several printing runs.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor (Goudie) and children: Tom (Josie), Lynda Williams (Gary), Patricia Elson (Donny) and Christopher, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Merv was pre-deceased by sisters Leta Carson (Vivian), Ethel Wagg (Art), Viola Jones (Dick) Renwick (Charles) and brothers Clarence (Olive) and Harvey (Verna). Survived by sister-in-law Shirley.
