Obituary for Jocelyn Alice Margaret "Joy" Grieves (Barks)

Jocelyn Alice Margaret "Joy" Grieves (Barks)
In Loving Memory of Jocelyn Grieves
After gracing this world with her enchanting presence for 78 years, it is with bittersweet sadness that we announce Jocelyn Alice Margaret Grieves (nee Barks) made her way to heaven on September 1, 2015. Best friend and wife of 59 years to Stanley, she will be so missed by him and their four children; Barbara Lester (Mark), Rick Grieves (Jane), Lynda Ashford (Al McDonald), Patty Babineau (Jeff); her eight grandchildren—Luke (Emmy) and AJ (Lindsay) Lester, Laurie (Claude Bourdages) Ashford, Amy (Shane) Valm, Eli Stamp, Tim Grieves, Seth and Jocelyn Babineau; her seven great-grandchildren—Cali, Alice, Addison and Sadie Lester, Dawlson, Darius and Willow Bourdages; her sisters Valerie Baldwin, Patricia Erickson and brother Geordie Barks as well as many friends and family. She is reunited in glory with her parents Arnold and Leola Barks, her brothers Lane, Bill and Dale, her baby sister Iris and her great-granddaughter Violet Lester, all of whom she missed so much.

Jocelyn (known fondly as Jo, Joy or Grannie), was born in Carrot River, Saskatchewan on March 10, 1937. A true beauty inside and out, she caught the attention of her husband through pencil and paper as pen-pals. After marrying, they relocated to Ontario where they raised their family in Hamilton, before retiring on South Lake in Minden. Joy was the best kind of person to be around. She was thoughtful and kind, sprinkling love everywhere she went. She was a woman of God and a prayer warrior; a hard-working prairie girl who always put others first. She had a knack for creating beauty in the simple things and was a talented artist and avid reader.
We'll feel her loss in many ways. We'll surely miss her hearty laugh, warm smiling face, fresh-baked "Grannie Buns", the back rubs she'd eagerly offer and the homemade ornaments she would hand out at Christmas. But mostly we'll remember fondly her love of the Lord and aptitude for helping and caring for others.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Extendicare Haliburton who cared for Joy with dignity and love.

Friends are invited to join the family in celebrating Joy's amazing life on Sunday, September 6, 2015 at Lakeside Baptist Church (9 Park Street, Haliburton) from 2 p.m. until the time of the Service at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lakeside Baptist Church and can be arranged through the Gordon A. Monk Funeral Home Ltd., P.O. Box 427, Minden, Ontario K0M 2K0.

She was born when times were tough, and people even tougher
She was taught to love and show grace in a world that was getting rougher

She knew about pain and loss and she knew that things don’t last
She knew that Jesus had a perfect world waiting when this one passed

She learned to do much with little, and make use of everything
Popsicle sticks, an empty bag of milk or unused piece of string

When times were tight she buckled down and did the best with what she had
She made clothes from others' hand-me-downs, made riches out of rags

She was a pillar, a rock, strong foundation and a shoulder to cry on
She feared nothing because she knew the journey ended at the gates of Zion

With love, she bandaged wounds, kissed hurts and held the crying
She cared about everyone equally; the sick, wounded and the dying

So tough, she walked around on a broken ankle until it healed
Knew great pie only came from apples that were hand-peeled

Roast beef, whipped potatoes and buns with real butter
Daughter, mother, sister, wife, great-grand and grandmother

Like her fireplace, her heart was the warmest
Her love for her family was obviously enormous

Jocelyn, Jo, Joy, Mom, Grannie and Grans
Look at all the things she did with faith and weathered hands

Sometimes life’s not easy, so she worked hard for what she had
She loved her kids no matter what, mostly good, but sometimes bad

If there’s one thing she knew with all her heart and soul and mind
It's that prayer works and all things happen in God's intended time

So don’t just remember things that Jocelyn Grieves accomplished
Remember she loved and trusted her Lord and ran her race till it was finished
