Remembering Frank

From the Family of the late Dick and Evelyn Hewitt of Little Hawk Lake

Frank Chambers has always been a friend to the Hewitt Family. Their ties go back for more than sixty years when the two families began sharing the hunting grounds at Red Pine and Clear Lake. Many successful hunts and story/legends fell out of those years and today, a third generation of hunters and stories is now coming online.

Frank as everyone knows was a carpenter, really, a builder of genius. He was also also a great mentor. His Blue pickup could be found at any worksite across the county, be it a new cottage, an addition or a big new home, he was there. Our lodge at Little Hawk Lake was one of those sites. Back in the mid-1950s, our mother Evelyn Hewitt (the carpenter in our family) decided that the little one-room cabins had to be restructured as cottages. Frank was soon on site advising on the structural pieces and filling in Mother’s few gaps in carpentry skills. A few years later in 1959, we needed a larger dock at the lodge. Mother and Frank came up with a plan to build a 40 slip dock/marina on the ice in late winter. Again Frank was there, providing the necessary oversight as well as a lot of the heavy lifting. That dock is still there and floating today.

And Frank was also a boat builder, a skill he taught my mother. As kids, we will always remember Mother building plywood boats in the basement of the lodge watching as she bent the plywood sides into the large oak nose-piece that Frank had made by hand from one large piece of oak stock that he had shaped and planed to perfection. It always fit with the precision of a Meccano piece. Some of these boats are still around the lake today.

Yes Frank will be missed and we are saddened by his passing. He will be remembered by many.

The Hewitt siblings: Vern (in spirit), Peter, Carolyn, Larry and Roger.
