Obituary

In Loving Memory of William “Willie” Schmidt, 89
of Scarborough and Kennisis Lake, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2020 in Haliburton, Ontario. Born on July 5, 1930 in Reichenbach, Thüringen, Germany; son of the late Albin and Hulda (nee Wenk) Schmidt.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years; Ilse (Saretzki); sons Gordon of Scarborough, Kirk (Marjorie) of Sutherlands River, Nova Scotia; grandsons William and Kaelan and granddaughter Amy, all of Nova Scotia. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Kurt.

Willie learned the art of fine cabinet making in Kenzingen, Baden-Württemburg, Germany after leaving East Germany in 1949. During his time in southern Germany, Willie met and married Ilse before emigrating to Canada in the summer of 1954. Throughout his career, he supervised residential and commercial construction projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area before retiring in 2006. Neighbours at Kennisis Lake remember the familiar drone of his cement mixer as he worked on various projects around the cottage. He spent his retirement years between his home in Scarborough and his beloved cottage at Kennisis Lake. Throughout his life, Willie enjoyed a good joke, gardening, building furniture and of course hunting. He spent many falls moose hunting in Northwestern Ontario with friends and his son, Kirk. After retirement, Willie devoted his time to building his dream cottage affectionately coined “The Hacenda” which is a legacy to his wood working skill, determination and work ethic.

The family wish to thank the staff at Haliburton Highlands Health Services for the care and compassion Willie received.
